The Monitor computer program performs thermal rating calculations for heat exchangers and exchanger networks.  

The calculations are rigorous. Fluids may be single phase or multiphase and a range of exchanger configurations may be modeled.

Monitor thermodynamics can model a wide range of applications such as crude preheat trains, FCCU slurry exchangers and HDS unit feed/effluent exchangers.

Calculations may be performed for a single case or a range of cases. Data and results are stored in a database which enables it to track the performance of a network over time and to identify significant trends.

The day-to-day variation in refinery operation makes it difficult to isolate the effect of fouling in a network. Calculated fouling factors are normalised using a base case in order to eliminate extraneous factors and identify the loss of duty caused by fouling alone.

Results show the loss in network duty caused by the fouling and cost of making it up in the furnace. The cost of throughput loss is also shown. Monitor economic calculations then determine the costs and benefits of cleaning selected exchangers and how often they should be cleaned.
